Nebraska basketball’s loss of its star signee is now completely official.

Former Nebraska basketball signee Xavier Johnson has announced he’s committed to Pitt. The announcement makes his departure from the Cornhuskers 100 percent official.

When Johnson announced earlier this month that he had asked for a release from his signed Letter of Intent, he claimed the Huskers still had a chance to win him back.

Despite those claims, it seemed unlikely that someone who has backed away from his signed LOI was likely to sign another one with the same team. It also seemed as though the departure of Kenya Hunter, an assistant coach who went from Lincoln to UCONN was the reason Johnson decided he was no longer coming to Nebraska.

Johnson took an official visit to Pitt last week. While there was some trepidation about him seeing another campus, the situation at Pittsburgh was so bad, I didn’t really believe new head coach Jeff Capel was going to able to pull the guard in.

Johnson announced he had decided to go to Pitt by posting a video on his official Twitter account. The video was titled “the next step” and showed highlights of the talented guard in high school and ended with a montage of shots of the Pittsburgh basketball team.

It seems as though the Huskers suspected they weren’t going to be able to get the former commit back in the fold. Miles recently secured the commitment of Robert Morris transfer guard Dachon Burke.

The one downside to that signing is that Burke won’t be able to play for the Cornhuskers until the 2019-2020 season. For the coming season, it appears Nebrasketball is looking to fill the hole on their roster with a big man, instead of another guard.

The Nebraska basketball team recently hosted 7-0 center Francisco Caffaro for a visit. The scuttlebutt is that the race for Caffaro is down to the Cornhuskers and St. Mary’s.
