Nebraska baseball: Pitching implodes again in postseason eliminating loss
The Nebraska baseball team saw their chances for a postseason come to an end in the same way far too many of the losses have shaken out.
For the second time in the Darin Erstad era, the Nebraska baseball team is going to finish with a losing record. For the first time in the Darin Erstad era, no matter what happens today, the Cornhuskers will miss the postseason entirely.
One year after winning the regular season Big Ten Baseball Title, the Huskers won’t even get a chance to play in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament. Erstad’s boys had a slim chance of making the postseason if they had won their Friday game.
Then they lost to Illinois 13-6 and the season was effectively over. Pitching was the culprit for what seemed like the 100th time on Friday.
Injuries are one thing, but the fact of the matter is that it’s not clear just how good this pitching staff would have been even if it was 100 percent healthy. The Friday starter has been the Friday starter all season long and he hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire.

The pitching staff has also been quite mediocre for quite a while now. If the Huskers are going to find a way to get back to the postseason next year, changes are going to need to be made to the staff.
While most people are focusing on Erstad, it seems there is at least one other coach who might have to pay the price. Pitching coach Ted Silva has been with Erstad since the beginning.

He was brought in because the rumors were he was among the best of the best. The performance of his charges has never really matched that reputation. Saturday will mark the end of what has been a truly bad season. Starting on Sunday, it’s going to be time for the Nebraska baseball team to start picking up the pieces. That means looking at what worked and what didn’t. Players and coaches alike.
