Nebraska baseball: Latest loss feels too familiar this season
The frustrating season for Nebraska baseball gets worse.
Following a 12-4 win Saturday and holding a 4-2 lead on Sunday afternoon, it seemed like maybe the Nebraska baseball team was turning a corner.
Then a very familiar story reared its ugly head. An offense that had been rolling along stopped rolling.
A pitching staff that has basically been struggling all year long, began struggling again. When the smoke cleared and the final score was announced, Rutgers managed to score six straight runs and the Cornhuskers lost the game 8-4.

That made a series loss to a very mediocre Scarlet Knights team just another chapter in a season going south. Head coach Darin Erstad’s confusion over why the team lost continues to be the most annoying part.
Yes, the players need to play better. At the same time, when they continue to put out an effort that doesn’t seem 100 percent, it’s hard not to wonder if the coach shouldn’t be bearing more of a responsibility than he has so far.
There have been more than a couple of comments where Erstad put the blame solely on the players. While they are the ones out on the field, it’s up to the coaches to get them ready to go.
The pitching staff, especially has not really looked ready to go all year. The team doesn’t have an ace, nor does it really have a Saturday starter.

Even worse is that it’s been that situation for a little while now. While the Nebraska baseball team won a conference title a year ago, they weren’t matching up well with talented teams. The question now is whether or not the program can survive another season with Erstad at the helm.
