Nebraska baseball hasn’t won a game this week yet.

If you thought Nebraska baseball hit rock bottom when it lost to UNO for the first time in 20 years, it appears the team decided to tell you to hold its beer.

No, the Rutgers baseball team isn’t terrible. Their victory over the Cornhuskers improved them to 5-5 in conference and 20-14 on the year.

It’s not that Rutgers is a terrible team, it’s just that when the Huskers moved to the Big Ten, they were exactly the kind of squad Nebraska was supposed to be able to dominate.

Rutgers doesn’t do anything particularly well. They don’t have players that are as frightening at the plate as Scott Schreiber.

And yet, they basically dominated a Huskers team that fans of the team have been waiting to wake up for most of the season.

The Cornhuskers’ head coach has been waiting for the team to wake up for most of the season. Erstad has pulled very few punches over the last few weeks.

There have been plenty of comments about how the team isn’t very good. After the loss to Omaha, he made a comment that he didn’t like the effort.

Here’s the thing. The effort, and the poor performances are something Erstad needs to own.

He’s been here long enough that this is his team. None of the players he’s sending out there every day are inherited.

That’s even more damning considering that one of the reasons so many thought Erstad was the right hire is because he was such a hard nosed, maximum effort player.

It was expected that approach would rub off on his team. It’s hard to tell whether or not the problem really is a lack of effort, or just a lack of execution.

What is clear is that Erstad was right when he said this wasn’t a particularly good team. This is coming off a season where they won the conference in the regular season last year.

They then played rather poorly when the postseason began. Should the season continue going in this direction, it looks like we’re about to see the second losing season in seven years under Erstad.

If that happens, it would certainly seem as though the head coach should be on the hotseat. Even when the team has won, the Nebraska baseball team hasn’t looked like one that can hang with the big boys. That’s something Husker fans shouldn’t be happy about.
