Nebraska baseball stayed alive in the hunt for the Big Ten tournament, barely.

The Nebraska baseball team is having a rather bad season. While it appears the team is going to need a miracle to get the NCAA tournament, even making the Big Ten tournament is in doubt.

After losing the first game of the series against Rutgers, the Cornhuskers had lost three games in a row. They also came into Saturday ahead of just Northwestern and Penn State in the Big Ten.

With the 12-4 victory and a Maryland loss, the Huskers actually jumped up another spot in the standings. A win tomorrow and they will be getting close to jumping over Rutgers into the seventh spot in the standings.

Considering only the top eight teams actually go to the conference tournament, the win on Saturday and a potential win on Sunday is extremely important. The fact that a dream run through the tourney is the only way the Huskers are making the NCAA postseason makes it even more important.

For the most part, Darin Erstad’s squad have been a team that finishes the regular season on hot streaks. With the kind of offensive talent this team has, a hot streak is far from out of the question.

So far, a pitching staff that is being held together by bailing wire has been getting in the way of the team getting on a streak this year. If the team does go on a hot streak, it’s going to need some good baseball.

The last portion of the regular season is not exactly filled with easy opponents. A win on Sunday is a must. Now we’ll just sit back and see if the Nebraska baseball team can parlay a good Saturday into a series win and keep the season on track.
