While some are surprised that the Nebraska football team is still contending for the top offensive tackle in the country, Dylan Raiola isn’t missing his shot. In fact, he’s using his shot to land David Sanders and rally the entire state in a rather unprecedented attempt at peer recruiting.
Raiola made it clear he wanted to enlist the fans in the effort. When it became public that Sanders was paying a visit to Lincoln this weekend, the presumed starting quarterback took to social media to form a rally around the 5-star prospect’s arrival.
Nebraska football fans take part in rally for 5-star target
If Nebraska football wasn’t the front-runner for David Sanders before this weekend, one has to think they might have jumped into the lead now that he’s in Lincoln.
Since coming to town, Sanders was greeted at the airport and at UNL by fans who wanted to show just how badly they wanted him to become a Husker. Raiola talked to the local news about his efforts to land his former high school teammate and how Sanders was blown away by the welcome.
"He knew people were coming but I don't think he understood it was going to be like this,” Raiola said during one of the impromptu rallies.
Even Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule looked on at the welcome the offensive tackle prospect got and seemed genuinely surprised at what he was looking at. Perhaps even Rhule, who knows Husker fans are dedicated and passionate, learned a thing or two about how much the fanbase wants great players at NU.
Throughout his arrival, Sanders smiled broadly, clearly blown away by the reception. Now it’s time to turn that into something tangible.
The Nebraska football team needs to close the deal. They need to show why fan support isn’t the only reason for become a Cornhusker. But they certainly have a leg up.
