Nebraska Cornhuskers officially miss hosting a regional despite hot finish

When the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team won the Big Ten Tournament title, it was a last ditch effort to host a regional, but the squad will be on the road.

Fresh off their first Big Ten Tournament title in Nebraska Cornhuskers history, it was probably silly to wish that Will Bolt and company had played themselves back into a regional host role. But I still thought they might have, considering what the attendance was for the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha.

With the Huskers playing in the tournament all week and weekend long, people kept showing up in near record breaking numbers. The park was loud, NU fans were raucous. They put on a show that the NCAA should have found tempting. In the end, their RPI and some losses to teams they had no business losing to, weighed too heavily.

Where Nebraska will play next weekend is still up in the air until later this morning. The NCAA Tournament selection show is at 11am on ESPN2. That's where the Huskers will find out where they're going. But at least now they know the possibilities of their regionals.

Nebraska Cornhuskers will go on the road for NCAA Tournament

The 16 host sites were unceremoniously announced late Sunday night, and there aren't a ton of surprises in the bunch:

  • Athens (Georgia)
  • College Station (Texas A&M)
  • Chapel Hill (North Carolina)
  • Charlottesville (Virginia)
  • Clemson (Clemson)
  • Corvallis (Oregon State)
  • Fayetteville (Arkansas)
  • Greenville (East Carolina)
  • Knoxville (Tennessee)
  • Lexington Regional (Kentucky)
  • Norman (Oklahoma)
  • Raleigh (NC State)
  • Santa Barbara (UC Santa Barbara)
  • Stillwater (Oklahoma State)
  • Tallahassee (Florida State)
  • Tucson (Arizona)

The only real surprise in this group is that Indiana State didn't get to host a regional. However, like the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Sycamores didn't win some games they needed to in order to build their resume a bit more.

Over the course of the season, the Huskers have been projected to play at Norman, Stillwater, Fayetteville and Lexington. It wouldn't be a remote shock to see the committee that puts the seedings together to send NU to College Station either.

For those hoping beyond hope, there is still a road to host a super regional, though it's a long shot. One of the top 8 seeds would have to get knocked off while the Nebraska Cornhuskers make it through the next round.
