Trae Taylor delivered Nebraska a much-needed reality check after extreme drama

Nebraska football heard the right message after a week that turned the story around one prized commit into a circus.

For the first week of May, the drama surrounding the Nebraska football team has been off the charts. Unfortunately, almost all of that drama centered around 2027 quarterback commit Trae Taylor. It's unfortunate because all the drama centering around him was completely unbidden.

The first bit of drama centered on Taylor's response to the Huskers' loss in the recruiting battle for Ahmad Hudson to LSU. Some radio hosts felt he was far too positive about the situation and took him to task. Just a day later, reports surfaced that Ohio State is pushing hard for the 4-star QB.

Trae Taylor gave Nebraska football a needed response as Ohio State rumors grew

One day later, rumors of Trae Taylor to Ohio State hit a fevered pitch as On3's Steve Wiltfong confirmed that conversations were serious enough to discuss NIL dollars. However, just when things seemed to be falling apart at a rapid pace, the quarterback commit tried to calm things down.

“At this point in the process, Ohio State stands where the other schools stand,” Taylor told Wiltfong. “I’m committed to not taking any trips to campus. But I’m definitely not going to ignore any coach that calls me. The way football is now, I refuse to burn any bridges."

Trae Taylor still sounds locked in with Nebraska football despite the outside pressure

It was the next comment that would hopefully calm Nebraska fans down. “But I’m a Cornhusker.”

The young quarterback, who is still due to move to Lincoln soon and transfer to Millard South for his final year of high school ball, also sang the praises of Husker head coach Matt Rhule while talking to Wiltfong. "This spring game to me was awesome,” Taylor said about taking several trips to his future home this spring.

The quarterback talked about how much he thinks the coaches are developing talent at all kinds of positions. “So the staff is clearly working their butts off to develop and, of course recruit,” Taylor continued. “I just love this whole staff, my offensive staff. We’ve always been on the same page."

Trae Taylor is saying all the right things. He's still doing all the right things. For now, it doesn't appear there's much to worry about as far as losing one of the crown jewels of the 2027 recruiting class.

All that said, when Ohio State comes calling, people listen. Nebraska needs to stay ahead of any moves and make sure he doesn't flip. If Trae Taylor ended up in Columbus, then some real drama would spark up.
