Since the day the Nebraska football team secured the commitment of quarterback Trae Taylor, one analyst or another has been waiting for him to think again and decommit. Despite the belief that someday, the quarterback - who is now the top QB in the 2027 class according to 247Sports - will eventually go somewhere else, Taylor himself has said over and over that he's a Husker through and through. He even moved to Nebraska to play his final high school season closer to where he'll enroll in college.
Despite his protestations and his move to Lincoln, there are still analysts who believe he could eventually flip his commitment. The latest analyst to believe the quarterback could eventually move to another team is CBS Sports' Cody Nagel. The expert wrote about his top 5-star flip candidates for this cycle, and the future Husker is on that list.
"Trae Taylor is viewed as the future of Nebraska's quarterback room, and his standout performances this summer at the Elite 11 and The Opening Finals only strengthened his case as the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the 2027 class," Nagel wrote. "Ohio State hasn't made much ground in its attempt to flip Taylor away from the Huskers, but the Buckeyes continue to stay involved."
"It is going to be very difficult to flip him from his commitment to Nebraska. The nation's top quarterback currently resides in the Cornhusker State and will end his high school career in Omaha, not too far from Lincoln. If Nebraska wins this season, he is not going anywhere. That said, Ohio State has not given up and will continue pushing for a flip until Taylor stops answering the phone."
Nebraska football still faces national doubts over Trae Taylor’s commitment
So why is Taylor still on the list of 5-star flip candidates when Nagel's own writing admits that the Huskers have managed to hold onto the quarterback while Ohio State tries in vain to pry him away? Mainly because the national sports media simply expects Nebraska to lose this kind of fight.
No one can really blame someone like Nagel for believing that, even if he's told 100 times that Trae Taylor is sticking around, it will eventually change. The sport in general has seen the power of a commitment drop precipitously in the last few years.
It's also hard for national analysts to believe a Nebraska football program whose biggest success in the last decade is two straight 7-6 seasons would be able to haul in the best quarterback in the class even if they've now done it two of the last three years.
Analysts dismiss Dylan Raiola's commitment as a combination of the quarterback being a Husker legacy and Matt Rhule and company going out of their way to give Raiola whatever he wanted, including keeping an obviously overmatched offensive line coach who happened to be his uncle. But none of that applies to Taylor.
And so, no one really believes Trae Taylor will stick with his commitment to Nebraska through December. And yet, the 5-star quarterback himself has said repeatedly that he'll be a Husker next year. One has to wonder what the analysts will say when his promises become reality.
