The Nebraska football team will find out whether they can land their top 2027 quarterback target earlier than first thought. In the process, the Huskers will have to figure out, should they land Trae Taylor, whether or not he plans to stay in the 2027 cycle or whether, as reports have claimed for a few weeks now, that he’ll reclassify to the 2026 class.

Taylor has long held several schools among his top candidates and has been shockingly consistent in not tipping his hand on who he might eventually choose. Having said that, there have been plenty of indicators, including the 4-star gunslinger’s own word, that make ti seem as though the Nebraska Cornhuskers have a real shot.

On Monday, Greg Smith of Rivals reported that Trae Taylor’s June commitment date moved up to May. In other words, the Nebraska football team will find out if they’ve done enough to land the talented quarterback on May 1. Shortly after the report, Taylor confirmed the new date, meaning the Huskers needed to wait about three more weeks before getting the news.

“Mr Greg Smith stays on it,” Taylor wrote on X. “But after my last visit I’m feeling really good about how things are moving.  See you 5/1 with this decision.”

According to the Rivals rankings, Taylor is the 11th overall player and the top player in his class from Illinois. Right now, the quarterback has a top group of LSU, Notre Dame, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, and Texas A&M, in addition to Nebraska.

The quarterback threw for 3,061, 20 TDs, and 8 INTs in his sophomore season according to MaxPreps. He recently visited Lincoln on March 27 and then Auburn on April 5. With the trip to see Nebraska football so recently, it’s possible that moving up his commitment date is good news for Matt Rhule and company. There is also the added bonus that such an early announcement will give the Cornhuskers plenty of time to work on a flip, even if he reclassifies to 2026.
