If there was any doubt as to how good Nebraska quarterback commit Trae Taylor is, those doubts should be shut down now. A month after the new Millard South quarterback earned his fifth star from the analysts working with 247Sports, he also earned his fifth star from the analysts who work with Rivals and On3.

Not only did the Husker commit become a 5-star prospect in Rivals, but he also jumped way, way up the prospect rankings. He entered Monday as the 71st best player in the 2027 class. He’s now considered the No. 17 player in the entire cycle.

Taylor put together a strong junior campaign last year at Mount Carmel (Illinois) before transferring to Omaha (Neb.) Millard South this spring. He finished the season with 3,571 passing yards, 38 passing touchdowns, and only three interceptions. He also had 633 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. His move to Millard South was to be closer to the Nebraska football program so he could continue learning from Matt Rhule and the staff.

Bryan Munson of Rivals says that the thing that really drove Taylor to become a 5-star prospect was the way he’s carried himself this spring and summer. “What directly contributed to his new five-star ranking was that Taylor was named the Elite 11 Finals MVP, which is one of the most prestigious honors a high school quarterback can win. Taylor became the first Nebraska commitment to win the Elite 11 MVP, beating out 20 of the nation’s best quarterbacks.”

Past winners of the Elite 11 MVP include quarterbacks such as C.J. Stroud, Caleb Williams, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Fields, and Matthew Stafford. Taylor was recognized throughout the event for incredible accuracy and great decision-making, and he played with great consistency from the Elite 11 competition through the Nike “The Opening,” when he was recognized as the nation’s best.

The only negative of Taylor becoming such a hot commodity is that people keep expecting him to eventually put Nebraska in the rearview mirror. Earlier this spring, reports began circulating that Ohio State was gunning for the signal caller, and those reports were followed by plenty of people expecting the flip any time. It never came.

More recently, Trae’s father took to social media to make sure people understood his son wasn’t going anywhere. He made it clear his intent was to get people to understand all the rumors were totally false.

“Let’s please be clear, if we have these people in the building,” he wrote alongside a picture of the staff. “TRAE WILL BE WITH THEM IN DECEMBER. Stop the Trae is transferring narratives. There is not another head coach or support staff that Trae trusts more.”

Despite the protestations, it’s a safe bet that plenty of people, both within and outside the Nebraska program, will continue to wager that Trae Taylor will eventually leave. Meanwhile, Husker fans need to buckle up, carry on, and just wait and see what happens come December. If everything goes right, they’ll ink the No. 2 quarterback in the entire class and one who is only decimal points away from being the top gunslinger in his year.
