Following Trae Taylor’s performance at the Elite 11 competition, going from a 4-star prospect to a 5-star quarterback for Nebraska seemed like a given. On Wednesday morning, it went from something people thought should happen to something that officially happened.
Taylor’s bump up to 5-star status was teased about a half hour before the official announcement by 247Sports Tom Loy. The analyst posted a video of himself informing an anonymous player he’d earned the honor,, with that player not only blurred out but also put behind a voice masker. In the short video, the player was clearly overjoyed, saying he needed to tell his parents.
That Loy and 247Sports teased the announcement underlines just how big a deal it is for a prospect to get that bump to 5-star all on his own. While 247Sports routinely reclassifies a crop of players, it’s not very often they get a special call from the people in charge, letting them know they’re moving to a higher tier. That also demonstrates just how special Trae Taylor is and how much the Nebraska commit has impressed onlookers since committing to the Huskers.
Not only did Taylor get that valuable fifth star, but he jumped up quite a bit in the recruiting rankings for 247Sports. The Husker quarterback commit is now the No. 8 player in the 2027 class. That’s not only huge for Taylor and the Huskers, but it also adds one heck of a massive bit of hype for Millard South.

Trae Taylor’s 5-star status sends Nebraska football recruiting hype soaring
Taylor earned most of his accolades while playing at Illinois, but he transferred to the Omaha-area school for his senior year. He’s also living in Lincoln to be closer to the NU campus and Matt Rhule’s team.
Taylor replaces Rhett Thomalla as the starting quarterback for Millard South. Thomalla is heading into his freshman year with the Alabama Crimson Tide, so the school has to be ecstatic that its team is following up that rather impressive story with the top quarterback in the 2027 class.
Taylor isn’t getting quite as much love from On3, though he’s still among the best players in the country according to that site’s rankings. Rivals ranks him as the No. 71 player in the country, the No. 5 quarterback, and the No. 2 player in the state.
The Nebraska commit did get a bump in the official Rivals Industry Ratings as he’s the No. 44 player, No. 3 quarterback, and top player in the state.
Matt Rhule and Co. have done a ton of work on the 2027 class after struggling quite a bit in the 2026 cycle. Taylor has long been one of the crown jewels of the class for the Huskers, but he’s only impressed onlookers even more since this cycle really started rolling.
Over the last few months, he’s been so highly sought after that schools like Ohio State and LSU have put some serious pressure on him to decommit. However, Trae Taylor has repeatedly stood strong and made it clear he’s not going anywhere but to Nebraska come signing day.
