Since Thomas Fidone announced he wasn’t coming back to the Nebraska football team for the 2025 season, there’s been a lot of talk about why he decided to head to the NFL.
On Thursday, the former Husker tight end went in front of the media and talked about the decision to forgo an extra year with Nebraska. The idea is that had he come back for a sophomore year of Dylan Raiola and first full year of Dana Holgorsen running the offense, he might have put up big numbers that could pad his stats.
However, Fidone has mentioned before that the lure of trying his hand in the NFL was too much to turn down. After initially thinking he was coming back for another season with the Nebraska football program, he reversed course. On Thursday he gave his most extensive answer as to why.

Former Nebraska football tight end explains decision to head to NFL Draft
“Yeah, you know, I'm just, I mean, I know the type of player I am. I know the ability I have and what I can bring to the table. And what I'm able to do on the football field when, you know, the ball comes my way. And what I'm able to do when I make plays and stuff like that. And I've only really had two of the injuries. Obviously, it's not great injuries, but I had two injuries that I've had since college. So I just knew, after talking to my coaches and family, and the agent, and stuff, you know, obviously, like I said, I just knew the type of player I am. And it was time to move to the NFL.”
Fidone’s decision so far has looked like a good one. He impressed professional scouts when he worked out at the Senior Bowl. He’ll have a chance to do the same, and then represent the Nebraksa football program at the next level this spring.
