When Scott Frost first came to Nebraska, he was hailed as the Golden Boy of Nebraska football. He talked a big game, claiming he had all the answers. He routinely talked about how much better his staff was at doing things than the previous staff had been. It never came close to panning out on gameday. When the smoke cleared on the Scott Frost era, he never posted a winning record, and he was fired three games into his final season after losing to Georgia Southern. At the time, the issue never seemed to be trustworthiness, but maybe that was just because Husker fans were too trusting.
A new list from Saturday Blitz’s Nicholas Rome put together the Top 10 coaches in college football who should never be trusted to run a program. Frost made the list at No. 7, and while that’s not particularly high, it's notable that he made the list at all.
It’s also worth pointing out that while Frost’s tenure at Nebraska is the one most people think of, he’s in his second run at UCF, and it’s possible the Knights should be wary about trusting the head football coach as time goes on.
“Scott Frost is the perfect example of what one great season can do for a head coach as his 13-0 season in 2017 opened a ton of doors,” Rome wrote. “Frost has posted just 1 winning season in 8 years as a head coach, and went from a legend at Nebraska to someone the program would like to forget.”
Scott Frost gives Nebraska football another reason to feel burned by the past
“UCF made the decision to try and catch lightning in a bottle again, but it seems unlikely the decision will ever pan out.”
Frost was back to his old tricks in his first season back in Orlando. There was complaining about how he was treated in Lincoln. There were many mentions of how the regime before him left him with the cupboard bare. And there was yet another losing season. As Rome pointed out, the man who is or was considered a savior by two programs has almost always posted a losing season. That his winning campaign was 13-0 gets him far too much of a leash.
Nebraska certainly learned its lesson the hard way. Stories about his mismanagement still pop up every now and then. He’s even suing the University of Nebraska over his incredibly generous buyout after he was fired.
Scott Frost needs to be careful. It’s clear that the college football world is waking up. When he’s included in a list with guys like Brian Kelly and Lane Kiffin, his reputation is moving in the wrong direction.
Certainly, Nebraska would never be foolish enough to trust Scott Frost again. When will UCF learn its lesson?
