Matt Rhule and the Nebraska football team had a heck of a weekend. Of the 16 players they hosted for official visits, five committed over the weekend. On Wednesday afternoon, Nehemiah Ombati made it number six.
Ombati announced his official pledge to the Huskers through a live stream on the official Rivals YouTube page. He officially picked NU over Michigan State and Missouri, though his school choice really came down to making things official. The 4-star defensive lineman out of Shakopee (Shakopee, MN) has long been considered a heavy lean to the Huskers by several recruiting analysts.
Even with the Wednesday afternoon show only crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s, it’s another massive boost for Nebraska’s 2027 recruiting push. The pressure has been on Rhule and his staff to produce a much better class than the one they got in the 2026 cycle, and so far, they seem to be doing just that.
Ombati is considered the No. 43 defensive lineman in the 2027 class and the No. 2 player in the state of Minnesota according to 247Sports. He is also the second player the Huskers managed to steal from under Golden Gophers head coach PJ Fleck, joining Utah defensive lineman Ma'atoe Moe.
Nehemiah Ombati gives Nebraska football sixth commitment from huge visit weekend
Moe committed to Minnesota a few weeks ago, but flipped his commitment on his official visit to Lincoln this past weekend. The same weekend that Nehemiah Ombati was visiting Nebraska.
The defensive lineman may have hinted to the world that he would be the 16th commitment in the Cornhuskers’ class when he rescheduled his visits. He was originally supposed to hit Missouri on June 12, but he moved things around and was instead in Lincoln for the last weekend before his announcement.
That’s even bigger considering the Tigers were widely viewed as the early leader after two visits to Colombia. However, Nebraska and Rhule’s coaching staff clearly made him a priority along the defensive line and eventually won the race.
It’s not surprising that the Cornhuskers went all in on Ombati, considering the numbers he put up in his junior campaign. In 2025, he tallied 70 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.
Ombati makes the 16th commit for Nebraska and continues what’s been one heck of a June heater. Rhule’s 2027 cycle has now almost doubled its commitments in the last four days, and that wasn’t the only good news that came down for NU on Wednesday.
Just an hour and a half before Ombati announced he was the newest commit, Trae Taylor, one of the longest 2027 commits, got his fifth star from 247Sports. He was also ranked as the No. 8 player in the class and the top quarterback.
Both of those developments will only help NU move up the ranks as they try to make it into at least a Top 15 finish. Considering they were somewhere around the 70’s for the 2026 class, that would be a massive jump. It would also continue getting things trending in the right direction for Nebraska, which needs all the good vibes it can get heading into the 2026 season.
