Ahead of Khalil Taylor’s official visit to Nebraska, the 4-star wide receiver gave a very strong hint that his plans for college might have changed. As Victory Bell Rings’ Sydney Ciano rightly pointed out, it’s possible that the Pennsylvania product’s trip to Lincoln could end in “disaster” for Penn State and Matt Campbell. If things changed as completely and quickly as they look at the moment, disaster doesn’t quite cover it for Nittany Lions fans.
Taylor is in town for the last official recruiting weekend of the month for the Huskers, and posts on social media have shown that Matt Rhule and the Cornhuskers are rolling out the red carpet big time for the Pine-Richland High player who is currently ranked No. 82 nationally, No. 13 at wide receiver, and No. 4 prospect in Pennsylvania according to the 247Sports Composite.
One post showed Nebraska literally rolling out the red carpet as Khalil Taylor walked down the long rug with a party atmosphere all around him. However, it was an Instagram post from the former Penn State commit’s account that should have the Nittany Lions deeply worried.
In the photo, the wide receiver is standing next to Husker commit Trae Taylor, who is in town to help peer recruit some of the better uncommitted targets in the country. The two Taylors have hit it off over the last few months and consider each other good friends. That’s a big asset for NU to use as they continue to try and build a 2027 class that could eventually challenge for a Top 10 spot in the national 2027 rankings.
Khalil Taylor Nebraska football visit could become Penn State disaster
Things have already seemed to start trending towards NU even before Taylor hit town. Before the visit, he gave a cryptic tease about where he was leaning, saying only “Trae Taylor” after originally saying he wasn’t sure what team had the lead. He also originally didn’t plan on making an official visit to the Cornhuskers after seemingly locking back in with Penn State.
The 4-star wide receiver was originally committed to the Nittany Lions, but he became a “free agent” after former head coach James Franklin was fired. His replacement, Matt Campbell, has worked hard to reestablish a relationship, but those efforts might have fallen just short.
Taylor has said he’ll announce his final commitment on July 6. As Ciano put it, “That's quite a bit of time for Rhule to put the work in and catch up to the Nittany Lions. He made a huge push for Pottstown, Pa., wideout Matthew Gregory before the four-star committed to UCLA, and it's clear he's not backing down from Campbell for Taylor.”
She also further explained why she sees the potential loss of Khalil Taylor to NU as a disaster for Penn State: “Taylor is also one of the last hopes at landing a currently uncommitted wide receiver in this class in general. Penn State is waiting on a decision from four-star Deshawn Hall as well, but those hopes are slowly diminishing as experts project Auburn landing him. Campbell can't go with just one wide receiver committed in this cycle.”
Nebraska still has a long way to go and a relatively long wait to see if everything is headed in the right direction, but the Nittany Lions are clearly nervous, and that can only be a good thing at this stage.
