The Blue Chip showdown between Nebraska and Penn State for 4-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor might be winding down. Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, has hinted that he's close to making his final commitment. He might have also given a hint as to just who he'll pick when he does make that call.
During Taylor's appearance at the OT7 camp earlier this spring, the wide receiver was asked about where he was thinking about going. While at first he was plenty cagey and said he didn't know yet, it didn't take long for him to offer up a hint. When he was pressed to give even a crumb of an idea, he said simply, "Trae Taylor."
The 4-star receiver might have just been playing a little game and teasing fans to get them excited; he did go out of his way to mention the Nebraska quarterback commit rather than any Penn State commit. At the very least, it feels as though the Husker QB was on his mind. That's enough of an accomplishment for a program that has been absolutely red hot in recruiting this month.
There's also the little tidbit that while the Cornhuskers looked like they had already lost the race to the Nittany Lions, they are, in fact, very much still in the thick of things. Taylor will take his final official visit this weekend to Lincoln and then will reportedly announce his commitment in early July.
Khalil Taylor’s Trae Taylor tease could signal Nebraska football momentum
To some degree, Nebraska can thank Penn State for firing James Franklin, as it opened the door for them to potentially land the player ranked No. 82 nationally, No. 13 at wide receiver, and No. 4 in the state of Pennsylvania, according to 247Sports. He was committed to the Nittany Lions last winter, but decommitted after the turmoil and strife in Happy Valley. While he's forged a good relationship with new head coach Matt Campbell, it hasn't been quite strong enough for the speedburner pass catcher to cut the Huskers out of his life.
Listed at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, Taylor is coming off a junior year in which he totaled 33 receptions for 571 yards and 16 touchdowns. While those numbers at first glance aren't all that impressive, they did allow him to show off his ability to shift into another gear as he averaged 17.3 yards per catch and did find the endzone just under 50% of the time he had the ball in his hands.
During his recruitment over the last year, Khalil Taylor has forged a strong bond with Trae Taylor, which should certainly be seen as a big plus for Nebraska. The Huskers will certainly try to push that advantage when the Pennsylvania product is in Lincoln.
