Albert Simien loss could force Nebraska to circle the wagons around 4-star OL commit

Nebraska football may need to hold off Texas A&M for a key OL pledge

The Nebraska football team’s coaching staff knew landing 5-star offensive lineman Albert Simien was a long shot. So his commitment to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday likely didn’t sting too much. But with Simien off to South Bend, the Huskers may need to circle the wagons around one of their prized offensive line commits, as Texas A&M could very likely look to double back for Jordan Agbanoma.

It’s the Aggies, who lost the recruiting battle for Agbanoma back in May, who could come looking for some offensive line help. Mike Elko thought he would be scoring a 5-star interior offensive lineman this week, and then didn’t, which might make him more aggressive in filling that hole.

With Jordan Agbanoma, A&M was his leader from late December until March/early April. He said as much in previous interviews. Nebraska started to pick up momentum in the spring, however, and he committed to the Cornhuskers on May 20. He did not take his previously scheduled official visit to A&M at the end of May.

That he didn’t take that official visit could make Elko and his squad feel like they have a bit of an opening. It’s possible they could keep up the pressure on him and just try to get him to College Station to see one of the best football stadiums in the country. Should they manage to do that, there’s still six months until signing day. Plenty of time to drive a wedge between the 4-star offensive lineman and his current squad.

Jordan Agbanoma could become Texas A&M’s next Nebraska football target

All of that should give reason to the Nebraska coaches to circle the wagons and even put up a wall and drawbridge around the No. 7 interior offensive lineman in the 2027 class. However, at the moment, the Huskers must feel pretty confident in their ability to keep him in the class. Insiders say the Grayson High player hasn’t been in contact with the Aggies recently.

It’s likely that Elko and his staff moved on to guys like Simien, thinking they had a very good chance to score talented offensive linemen elsewhere. As the options have dried up, Texas A&M might have inadvertently burned that bridge.

There’s also the tidbit about all of Jordan Agbanoma’s teammates who are also committed to Matt Rhule and Co. The offensive lineman is one of four Grayson players who are pledged to Nebraska in this class. He’s joined by offensive lineman KD Jones, tight end Joey Hunter, and linebacker Eli Harris. While playing with former teammates is never the end-all and be-all for these recruits, it has to be a plus when trying to fend off someone like Texas A&M looking to swoop back in late in the process.
