Massive Nebraska official visit weekend grows with surprise 5-star visitor

Nebraska football has a surprise visitor who could revive a massive LSU flip chase.

When 5-star tight end Ahmad Hudson committed to LSU last month, Nebraska coaches hoped they hadn't completely lost the fight. As it turns out, even if he is still committed to the Tigers, Hudson is giving the Huskers another chance to make their case with a surprise official visit to Lincoln this weekend.

Hudson's arrival was not originally among the reported crew of talented players coming to town for the Huskers' first massive official visit weekend of the spring and summer. Still, not long after those who had confirmed their attendance started showing up, Hudson took to social media to announce he'd be around as well. That was the first tidbit of good news. The second was that in his announcement, he very specifically called out quarterback commit Trae Taylor and wide receiver commit Tay Ellis.

The trio became fast friends while taking unofficial visits to Nebraska over the last year. Both Taylor and Ellis are also attending the recruiting weekend to peer-recruit players like Albert Simien, and now have the bonus of working on Hudson again.

Hudson is taking his fourth visit to Lincoln overall, showing that while he's still committed to Lane Kiffin's new team, he clearly has a soft spot for Matt Rhule and Co. In fact, there's such a soft spot that at one point, it was thought the 5-star right end from Ruston, Louisiana, would eventually commit to the Cornhuskers over LSU and others.

Ahmad Hudson gives Nebraska football a surprise chance to keep LSU flip hopes alive

Kiffin's arrival, paired with the recent addition of former Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron to the staff, was enough to get Hudson to stay closer to his hometown. That was a benefit to the Bayou Bengals' football and basketball teams.

Hudson is almost as highly regarded on the hardwood as he is on the football field. Rhule and basketball coach Fred Hoiberg had previously teamed up to try to bring Hudson to campus for both squads. It's a safe bet they are teaming up again this weekend as they work on getting him to switch his commitment.

While the Cornhuskers are expecting several commits, and maybe even a flip, Hudson's visit is a little different, as it seems more likely than not that nothing earth-shattering will occur this weekend. This, his fourth visit to town, is more about laying the groundwork for an eventual switch in his commitment later in the cycle. As long as it's before signing day, this visit will go a long way towards getting Nebraska back in the fight at the very least.

Hudson's trip is another reminder that recruiting fights (especially in this day and age) are never over until December. While the talent and position are certainly different, Husker fans should likely consider Hudson's recruitment to be very similar to Dylan Raiola's.

For quite a while, it felt as though the quarterback was as solid as solid could be for the Georgia Bulldogs. Then, just days ahead of the early national signing day, the quarterback flipped to Nebraska. If it doesn't happen this weekend, there's no reason to think NU will be out of the running for Ahmad Hudson until the very end.
