The Nebraska Cornhuskers have been on an absolute recruiting tear in June. It looks like they could start off July with good news as well, though in order to secure Amari “Bam” Whitfield, the Huskers will need to get past Florida.
According to a new report on Tuesday by Rivals’ analyst Tim Verghese, the good news is that NU is among the final two teams competing for the Orlando defensive back. Considering the run Nebraska DBs coach Addison Williams has been on this month, especially, there is a chance he could make some serious progress and convince Whitfield that Lincoln is where he belongs. On the other hand, all indications have pointed to the 3-star defender staying close to home and choosing the Gators for months.
Williams could be the real wild card here as he’s been recruiting Whitfield since he was a freshman in high school. It should also come as no surprise that when the defensive back took his official visit to Nebraska from June 12 to June 14, quarterback commit Trae Taylor was in his ear plenty.
It also helps that the Huskers already have Whitfield’s former teammate and defensive backfieldmate Danny Odem in the fold. It’s a safe bet Odem made plenty of sales pitches on what the Cornhuskers can offer over the last few weeks.

Amari “Bam” Whitfield decision could give Nebraska football a Florida recruiting shocker
The red-hot recruiting run for NU could also come into play. Players want to join teams with momentum. While the Huskers have struggled a bit on the field (despite going to two straight bowls for the first time in a decade), no one can deny they’re red hot this month, hauling in 11 of their 21 commits in the 2027 class. That kind of momentum can be almost as important as winning games because a player like Whitfield will see a program many, many of his peers want to be part of and head that way as well.
It’s also worth noting that while the Rivals RPM strongly favors the Gators, most of those predictions are long-outdated and date back to February. Steve Wiltfong’s prediction for Florida was on May 28, but a lot can change in over a month, especially in the age of NIL.
The defensive back isn’t one of the most highly rated prospects out there. In the Rivals Industry Ranking, Whitfield is a 3-star cornerback and is ranked No. 702 nationally, No. 79 at his position, and No. 58 in the state of Florida. Despite those very average rankings, many coaches clearly see something in him.
In addition to Nebraska and Florida, Kamauri Whitfield has offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Tennessee, among many others. In all, more than 40 teams have officially come calling.
Entering his final year of high school, Whitfield has tallied 81 total tackles, 54 solo tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 5 caused fumbles. He also has 12 pass breakups according to MaxPreps.
Bam Whitfield won’t keep people guessing much longer. He’s expected to announce his pick between Nebraska and Florida on July 6.
