Now that the Nebraska football team is focusing entirely on the 2027 recruiting class, a new target is Kamauri Whitfield. As it happens, Whitfield had been committed to the Tennessee Volunteers. Still, on Friday, he became a free agent again.

While Whitfield's decommitment shouldn't be considered the Vols being bumped out of the running, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound 3-star corner is lining up some visits that will go well into June. That indicates that the Orlando, Florida, prospect is looking at naming his new school anytime soon.

Among the teams that Nebraska will likely have to work the hardest against is the Florida Gators, who would love to see Kamauri Whitfield stay close to home. New head coach Jon Sumrall is the beneficiary of the defensive back's first visit after the decommitment, as he's slated to go to Gainesville on May 28.

Kamauri Whitfield's decommitment from Tennessee opens Nebraska football opportunity

Whitfield is then expected to take an official visit to Oregon on June 4, to Virginia Tech on June 9, and then to Nebraska on June 12. The Huskers getting the last official visit could be a big win. Of course, he's also expected to take an official visit to Maryland, and that could eventually make the Terapins the last visit.

Whitfield's decommitment comes just days after Tennessee cornerbacks coach Michael Hunter Jr. left the program to take a job with the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL.

It's going to be a while before Nebraska gets an official visit. Still, it's a near certainty that the Huskers will try to get Kamauri Whitfield to Lincoln for an unofficial visit for the Spring Game next month.
