When Matt Rhule was shifting the Nebraska football team’s defensive staff, the one guy he said new coordinator Rob Aurich had to keep around was Addison Williams. After a red-hot June on the recruiting front, it looks like Rhule knew what he was doing. On Sunday, the defensive backs coach scored yet another talented commit in Brennan Drummond. In the process, the Huskers beat out new powerhouses like Georgia. That Williams got this commit in such short order is yet another reason to be impressed with what the entire staff has managed to do in June.
Drummond’s announcement was a surprise to the general public, considering there weren’t any of the usual tells, like predictions that he was about to pick a school. One reason it came out of nowhere is that his recruitment did too. Drummond made his one and only visit to Lincoln the weekend of June 12, and that was all it took to convince him that NU is the place for him.
What should really impress Nebraska fans is that after his trip to Lincoln last weekend, he took an official visit to Georgia this weekend. Fresh off his trip to Athens, he decided that NU was where he wanted to play his college ball. It’s also not the first time in the last month that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have managed to beat Kirby Smart and Co. in a recruiting battle.
Drummond’s style of play in the secondary is a great fit for Nebraska’s new defensive coordinator, Rob Aurich. Drummond wants an aggressive defensive approach that applies pressure from multiple spots on the field.
Brennan Drummond commitment gives Nebraska football another Addison Williams win
“This Nebraska staff wants to attack blocks, stop the run, and create confusion with pressure, movement, and multiple fronts, and my game is a natural fit,” Drummond told Rivals shortly after his commitment.
The defensive back who will play out of Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2025 after spending last year in Oconee, Georgia, is not highly ranked. While the combination of safety and cornerback is “only” rated No. 884 nationally, No. 89 at safety, and No. 106 in Georgia. Despite those relatively low rankings for the 3-star prospect. However, he has an eclectic list of offers. In addition to Georgia and Nebraska, Drummond has offers from Arkansas, Florida, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest at the Power 4 level. He also has several offers from G6 and FCS schools, including one from the Ivy League at Dartmouth.
The defensive back had 97 tackles his sophomore year to go along with 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, and 4 QB hurries. That was a follow-up to a breakout season where he tallied 96 total tackles, 4 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble
He becomes the 20th overall commit for NU’s 2027 class and the fifth defensive back, joining Tory Pittman, Corey Hadley, Bryce Williams, and Jailen Hill. He's also the second commit in this class from North Carolina, joining running back Amir Brown.
Of the five DBs that the Huskers now have as part of their 2027 class, four of them committed this month. Overall, Nebraska started June with 10 commitments. With 9 days left to go, Rhule and Co. already doubled their commits.
