With Trae Taylor on board for the 2027 cycle, Matt Rhule and the Nebraska football team are casting a wide net for its 2028 QB target. While there are plenty of offers out there, it appears that the Huskers are closing in on Owen Herrick. More importantly, the Pennsylvania signal-caller is closing in on the Cornhuskers.
The courtship between Herrick and NU kicked up a notch very recently. The quarterback visited Lincoln in March, and the coaching staff has talked to and visited the player several times. Last week, the Huskers made an official, committable offer, and now it looks like they could be at the front of the race.
Among the things Herrick told On3's Bryan Munson was that he very much enjoyed his trip to Lincoln. "When I visited Nebraska in March, it was a surreal experience. They have a state-of-the-art facility that has everything a college athlete would ever need." Now the Huskers need to capitalize on their advantage in creating a surreal atmosphere.
Herrick is currently a 3-star quarterback who isn't rated particularly highly on either On3 or 247Sports, but he appears to be a rising talent. In addition to Nebraska, he has offers from Syracuse, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Toledo, Bowling Green, Arkansas, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Illinois, Liberty, UConn, Kent State, Miami (OH), Penn State, Maryland, Ohio State, Kentucky, and UCF. There are several other schools showing interest.

Owen Herrick gives Nebraska football another serious 2028 quarterback target
It's worth pointing out that the Huskers weren't a school that offered him right away. It appears that once he works with a coaching staff and the two sides get to know each other, they tend to like Herrick more and more.
He'll likely continue to rise, especially considering he's one of the best players in the state of Pennsylvania; he'll earn another star at least and keep rising in the ranks. Nebraska clearly has a foot in the door and could jump into the lead.
As a sophomore, Herrick threw for over 2,400 yards and 23 touchdowns on his way to leading his school to a 13-2 overall record. He also led the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League's (WPIAL) 6A division in passing.
The Huskers currently have a ton of offers out to some of the best quarterbacks in the 2028 class. Jayden Wade, Neimann Lawrence, Lukas Prock, Chandler Dyson, Hunter Fujikawa, Brady Quinn, Jaxson Carper, Anthony Turner, Gavin Hampton, Ayden Edwards, Treyvone Towns, Ace Amina.
Nebraska looks like it could pull off a couple of coups, with Fujikawa, Amina, Towns, and Hampton among those who could eventually pull the trigger for Matt Rhule and Co. As Owen Herrick enters the picture more, the Cornhuskers could shake things up. This could come down to a race to see who pulls the trigger on a commitment first, or it could be NU deciding to take a couple of young bucks from the 2028 cycle to bolster the numbers in its quarterback room. That current group does thin out quite a bit after the 2026 season.
