The Nebraska football team has been more active in the transfer portal than in any other year. The team has seen more departures and more additions than at any point in the program’s (albeit short) history in this area.
The last few days have been especially active. Unfortunately, the action that’s unfolded has been one loss after another.
There was the entrance into the portal of wide receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda. There was also the choice of UTRGV by former Husker linebacker Ismael Smith Flores. And there was the loss to Kentucky of offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete.
Nebraska football loses big fight for big offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete
Pete had at one time, seen to be a fairly strong lean to the Cornhuskers. However, things started shifting in the last few weeks. Those shifts included the fight seemingly coming down to Michigan and Nebraska.
However, things shifted again in the final few days before Pete made his final call. Suddenly there were whispers that an SEC school had entered the fray. Turns out those whispers were correct.
In the end, the offensive tackle chose Kentucky.
Suddenly, Matt Rhule and his crew lost out on their last offensive line target in the portal. It would certainly seem as though their shopping in that arena is over.
Now, if there’s one area of concern, it’s almost certainly the offensive line. It’s possible the Huskers could address that concern by next month’s signing day. There’s also one more portal window after spring practice.
Just how Nebraska football will regroup now is an open question and a situation that needs to be watched rather closely until the 2025 season kicks off.
