Nebraska football's fight for top transfer OT has become a duel with Big Ten rival

The Nebraska football team wants another tackle from the portal, but it will have to overcome the Michigan Wolverines in order to get him.

The Nebraska football team has been a big player when it comes to the transfer portal. There is at least one more player the Huskers would love to add to the roster ahead of next season. Unfortunately, there’s another Big Ten team standing in the way of NU landing that player.

Shiyazh Pete out of New Mexico State is one of the best offensive linemen left in the portal. You don’t have to take my word for it either. The fact that the Huskers and Michigan Wolverines are facing off in a battle for the tackle makes it very clear he’s someone that is drawing a lot of demand.

The 6-foot-8, 320-pound Shiyazh Pete was a 2023 All-Conference USA first-team selection. Due to injury, he didn’t play until Week 8 of the 2024 campaign. He did start the Aggies’ final six games at left tackle. The Nebraska football team would love to see him come to Lincoln and get plugged in as a starter for 13+ games in 2025.

If depth at the position plays a part in where Pete decides to go, it would seem as though the Huskers have an edge.

Michigan has worked to address the offensive line this cycle, adding Ferris State’s Lawrence Hattar and Cal Poly’s Brady Norton. It’s also still among the finalists for five-star offensive tackle and Alabama commit Ty Haywood. He’s scheduled to visit Ann Arbor this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Nebraska football team lost Bryce Benhart, Micah Mazzccua and Ben Scott to graduation and will be leaning on Teddy Prochazka, Tyler Knaak and Turner Corcoran to somehow return from numerous injuries in order to be contributors next season. With the quiet period starting today and lasting until Wednesday, it seems possible the Wolverines and Huskers could find out who wins the fight later this week.
