Nebraska football losing ground on transfer tackle to surprise SEC school

The Nebraska football team thought it was in good shape for Shiyazh Pete, but a surprise SEC school has reportedly taken the lead.

The Nebraska football team is busy pushing for one more transfer portal addition. Just a few days ago it seemed likely that it came down to the Huskers and the Michigan Wolverines.

Now it appears that NU is in a fight with a brand new team. It’s certainly not a particularly good sign that a third school has jumped into the fray.

The Nebraska football team was fighting with the Wolverines for the former New Mexico State offensive tackle Shiyazh Pete. Now there is quite a bit of talk that Pete is favoriting the Kentucy Wildcats.

Nebraska football takes a back seat to SEC squad

It’s hard to know for sure what might have seen both the Huskers and Wolverines drop back in the race. Nebraska for certain wants to add at least one more offensive lineman to their roster ahead of the 2025 spring practice session.

It’s also clear that there isn’t a ton else out there that they’re showing much interest in when it comes to the portal. However, the Kentucky Wildcats are said to the be the team that is leading the pack, according to Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong.

There is an added twist here that it’s not a done deal that he won’t go back to New Mexico State.

The offensive lineman played over 1,800 snaps for the Aggies over three seasons with all of them occurring at left tackle. The 6-foot-8, 320-pound offensive lineman was a 2023 All-Conference USA first-team selection, while in 2024, he didn’t play until Week 8 of this past season, starting the Aggies’ final six games at left tackle.

Should Pete go through with it and pick the SEC school over the Husker or Wolverines, it would mean the second portal player this year that NU has lost out on to UK. The Nebraska football team also watched running back Dante Dowdell head to Lexington in the portal just after the Pinstripe Bowl.
