While waiting for the commitment of 4-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor, Nebraska had a chance (however slim) to go 2-for-2 on Monday. Instead, Kamauri "Bam" Whitfield announced he was headed to the SEC and the Florida Gators.
The announcement was not remotely a surprise. After Whitfield originally looked like a heavy lean to the Huskers in early June, the tide began to turn towards the end of the month. Prediction after prediction for Whitfield to the Gators came in starting on June 3 from On3 analysts and on Monday morning, 247Sports analysts echoed those feelings. While it's a loss for defensive backs coach Addison Williams it's one he clearly saw coming and one the Huskers prepared for by landing plenty of talent earlier this year.
Nebraska has been pursuing Whitfield since February when he decommitted from another SEC school in Tennessee. While the Cornhuskers and Gators ramped up their pursuit right about the same time, Florida was originally the team that seemed like a foregone conclusion for the Sunshine State prospect. However, at some point, NU was able to drive a wedge between the two sides. Unfortunately, it wasn't able to keep that advantage as the summer started heating up.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound three-star cornerback from The First Academy (Orlando, FL), s ranked as the No. 733 player in the 2027 class, the No. 72 player at his position and the No. 59 player in the state of Florida according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Kamauri Whitfield picks Florida over Nebraska football in 2027 recruiting battle
Despite that relatively low ranking, it's clear plenty of schools saw something that was worth pursuing in Whitfield. In addition to Nebraska and the Gators, he garnered offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Wisconsin, among many others. It's not often that a recruit ranked so low has anywhere near that many top of the sport teams in pursuit.
Part of the ranking likely has to do with an abbreviated 2025 campaign where he tallied just 13 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 3 pass breakups, 1 sack and 1 quarterback hurry, according to MaxPreps. The years before his junior season were quite a bit more impressive. In 2024 Whitfield had 35 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 5 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 quarterback hurry as a sophomore after recording 33 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 4 pass breakups, 3 forced fumbles and 2 quarterback hurries as a rising freshman in 2023.
The good news for Nebraska is that, despite losing the battle for Amauri "Bam" Whitfield, the 21 commitments it has in the 2027 class can help blunt the pain. The expected commitment later Monday of 4-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor should rob the day of any regret. Four defensive back commits (safeties Brennan Drummond and Corey Hadley Jr., as well as cornerbacks Jailen Hill and Bryce Williams) and the defensive back/wide receiver Tory Pittman keep the Huskers' class in very good shape.
