Nebraska sees trending tide turning to Florida for vaunted defensive back

Nebraska football once looked strong for a Florida DB, but predictions now say otherwise

Considering how long the Nebraska football coaching staff has been courting Kamauri “Bam” Whitefield, it’s got to be deflating for Addison Williams, especially to see the Huskers losing ground in the race. Such is how the recruiting cookie crumbles. Whitfield, a 3-star defensive back out of Florida, is set to commit on July 6, and recent expert predictions show that while NU was once the frontrunner, it’s now fallen behind the Florida Gators as the favorites for his services.

On Sunday, On3’s Steve Wiltfong entered a prediction for the SEC school to win the commitment of Whitfield. On Tuesday, Nebraska insider Tim Verghese followed suit. Both predictions would suggest the Gators have won the race, though there is still a little over a week for the Cornhuskers to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

The problem for Nebraska at this point is that this isn’t Florida swooping in and stealing one from the Huskers at the last minute. Whitfield was a pledge to Tennessee until mid-February, and when he decided to decommit, Florida received several analyst predictions that month.

Indeed, the Huskers were more the team that swooped in and managed to jump to the front of the race.

Kamauri Whitfield predictions point toward Florida over Nebraska football

According to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, Whitfield is listed as a three-star prospect. He’s tagged as the No. 730 player in the class, the No. 72 cornerback in the class, and the No. 59 player from the state of Florida.

All of those numbers were a decline from earlier in the spring, but that hasn’t stopped big-time teams from coming calling.

In addition to Nebraska and Florida, Whitefield has offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Oregon, among many others.

The most disappointing aspect of the apparent rise back to the top by the Gators is that it would interrupt what has been an incredible hot streak for both Nebraska and defensive backs coach Addison Williams. The defensive assistant has had so much success in the 2027 class that he’s ranked among the Top 5 recruiters in the country according to 247Sports.

The good news is that since Nebraska already has four defensive backs committed in this cycle, the loss of Whitfield would sting, but it would hardly be a crippling blow.
