Nebraska football finds interesting way to fill in for injured player

The Nebraska football team is down a fullback but that isn't stopping them from using some 'big' formations.

Travis Hunter might be the most famous “iron man” player in the sport these days, but the Nebraska football team apparently has a couple of contenders for that title.

Fullback Barret Liebentritt is out for the season with a broken bone in his back, so defensive linemen Elijah Jeudy and Ty Robinson stepped up and took the field with the Huskers’ offense twice in goal-line situations against Ohio State.

The two players got into a power formation, with Jeudy lined up in front of Robinson, both right of Raiola, and pushed forward to clear a path for running back Dante Dowdell. The formation currently has a 50 percent success rate.

Nebraska football goes big after injury

The first time Robinson and Jeudy went in on offense against Ohio State, the Huskers were stuffed at the goal line after Dowdell tried to go over the top and was stuffed. The second time the Huskers tried the formation, they scored the go-ahead touchdown.

Jeudy called it an adrenaline rush when he spoke to the media after the game, one they eventually lost 21-17. The former high school tight end back on offense. He didn’t know he’d have a role in the backfield until the Thursday before the game.

“In the back of my head I was like, ‘Yeah, I do wish I could still play offense,’” Jeudy continued. “But I’m loving defense and I just loved the opportunity they gave me to be able to go out there and block for our running back.”

Neither player will see much action on the offensive side of the ball. However, if getting in the game once per week could be the difference between a win and a loss for the Nebraska football team over their last four games. This particular formation will be interesting to watch, especially if it’s used again against UCLA.
