Despite the loss to Ohio State this weekend, the vibes around Lincoln these days are pretty positive. That doesn’t mean some negative stuff can’t break through and there’s certainly some negative stuff breaking through for one of the Huskers’ fullbacks.

Matt Rhule announced on Monday that Barret Liebentritt is out for the rest of the season. He’s the first player in a couple of weeks who has been diagnosed with a serious injury. Unfortunately its quite serious indeed.

Rhule said that the fullback broke a bone in his back and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. That does mean that depending on how the Nebraska football season goes, he could be back in time for a bowl game, though obviously they would need a lot of help timing wise.

Nebraska football suffers season-ending loss

Liebentritt announced he was transferring from Notre Dame and joining the Huskers last May. While he hasn’t seen a ton of action, he did play in every game for the Irish in 2022. Mostly on special teams.

This year, he’s only got 28 snaps but he appeared in every game except for Ohio State. He’s been more of a blocker and special teams specialist in Lincoln as he doesn’t have a carry or a catch or a yard.

The good news here is that the fullback will have at least one more year of eligibility. So there is a chance he can come back next season and get back on the field for the Nebraska football team.
