Earlier this week, the smoke around top tight end prospect Ahmad Hudson possibly flipping from LSU to Nebraska got much thicker. The whispers and rumors got louder, even though the only official visit Hudson has scheduled so far is to see the Bayou Bengals.
So why are people around the Huskers so confident that Hudson will eventually not just pay a visit to Lincoln, but also eventually commit to Matt Rhule and Co.’s squad? The biggest reason, according to those who have been following this battle from the beginning, is that Hudson picked LSU because he’s a legacy prospect who wanted to stay close to home.
Meanwhile, Nebraska coaches have forged real relationships with Ahmad Hudson in a way the Tigers’ staff never has. Hudson also has close friendships with two Husker commits: quarterback Trae Taylor and wide receiver Tay Ellis. The staff and those commits have been working on the right end long before he committed to the Bayou Bengals, and they haven’t stopped once since he pulled the trigger on his pledge.
The dual-sport blue-chipper from Louisiana has been pledged to LSU for nearly four months now, but Nebraska remains in the thick of the mix. That alone makes Husker fans confident that there’s some daylight before Hudson and his home-state school. Additionally, Big Red is hoping to prove itself on the field this fall and ultimately turn its relationship with Hudson into a late-cycle flip.
As On3 analyst Tim Verghese pointed out earlier this week, the other big issue is that the LSU football coach Lane Kiffin and basketball coach Will Wade seemingly ignored Hudson’s very real interest in continuing to be a two-sport star.
Meanwhile, Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg has been in the thick of things once it became obvious that the Huskers had a real chance of landing the player. Hoiberg has talked to Hudson early and often about how he wants to use him once he arrives in Lincoln.
Wade and Kiffin, according to Verghese, have finally started to understand what’s at stake and what it will take. However, there’s a definite “too little, too late” feel around the whole situation. The On3 analyst added that while LSU coaches are trying to improve their relationship with the Blue Chip prospect, they have a lot of ground to make up compared to the Huskers.
The real key to all of this, and the biggest sign that a Nebraska flip is on the horizon for Ahmad Hudson, is if and when he sets that fall visit to Memorial Stadium. Hudson made it clear earlier this summer that he planned to visit. It hasn’t materialized yet, but people around Lincoln don’t seem too worried about it eventually getting finalized.
