The Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team will tip off its new season after its best campaign in program history. First up Monday night, the Huskers will face a retooled Le Moyne team that went 15-17 last year and earned the No. 4 seed in the NEC Tournament with a 10-8 record. The Dolphins have added 10 transfers and three freshmen while returning just two letter winners from last season.
This is NU's first meeting with Le Moyne, although the Huskers are 8-0 all-time against the current members of the Northeast Conference. NU's last game with an NEC team was in 2024-25, when the Huskers beat Farleigh Dickinson, 86-60. Monday's game will be the first of three meetings against NEC teams this season, as NU will host FDU (December 20) and New Haven (December 30).
The win should be a near certainty for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but fans hope one question will be answered on Monday night. Transfer forward Sam Orme sat out the exhibition season with an injury, but he could be back for the regular-season opener.
Nebraska Cornhuskers women's basketball opens on Monday afternoon
While Husker fans have to wait until Monday night to see Fred Hoiberg's squad tip off its season, they can get their fix in the afternoon by watching Amy Williams' team open its own season against San Jose State.
The Cornhuskers, led by Naismith Award candidate Britt Prince, are hoping for yet another trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Spartans are an entirely new team, bringing in 10 new players under their second-year head coach after a 4-28 record last season. They feature experienced players with at least four upperclassmen in the projected starting lineup. They play in the Mountain West Conference, and head coach Jonas Chatterton has extensive D1 assistant and associate coaching experience. Many coaches get off to a slow start, so it's premature to judge this squad by last year’s record.
More Nebraska Cornhuskers News
- On Saturday night, the Nebraska Cornhuskers took a lead into the fourth quarter for the third straight game. For the third straight game, they surrendered that lead and fell to 5-3 after a 5-0 start to the season. Husker fans are fed up, and for the first time in his career, Matt Rhule is facing real, sustained calls for his head.
- Even if Nebraska doesn't fire Rhule this year, offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen will likely be looking for a job this offseason, if not sooner.
- One reason Rhule might survive until at least 2027 is the recruiting progress his program has made. 35 recruits were in Lincoln for the Blackout game, and despite the loss, many said they were impressed by what they saw of the environment.
- The weekend wasn't all bad news for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Dani Busboom Kelly's volleyball team got a clean sweep, beating both Michigan and Michigan State. In both matches, the Huskers lost the first set before winning the next three. They're now 23-0 with five regular-season matches left.
