For the second straight day, the Nebraska volleyball team started a match in the state of Michigan very shakily. After losing the first set for the second straight day, the Huskers shifted into another gear.
Coming off a hard-fought victory over Michigan on Friday night, Dani Busboom Kelly's squad improved to 23-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over Michigan State. In the process, NU once again showed that their rule about being the first to 20 held strong, as it's been months since they lost a set while leading 20 -19.
Nebraska also showed that once they righted the ship and stopped losing sets, their opponents really couldn't hang. The Spartans won the first set, 25-21, but then dropped the next three sets, 25-19, 25-17,and 25-12. As a result, the question of when the Huskers will lose their first match remains very much up in the air.
Nebraska volleyball wins final three sets decisively to complete Michigan road sweep
The Big Red hit .340 in the match, despite a rough first set. Andi Jackson and Harper Murray led the way with 12 kills each on a combined 59 tries. Murray also led everyone on the court with 34 attacks.
Meanwhile, Olivia Mauch, who struggled a bit in the first set, led all teams with 12 digs. For what seems like the 57th time in a row, Nebraska's stat leaders showed just how good this team is. No single player steps up and puts the team on her shoulders; many step up when needed.
The Cornhuskers have now indeed won 57 straight regular-season games. Busboom Kelly has never lost a regular-season match as Nebraska head coach. Her only loss as the Husker coach came last year in the NCAA Tournament.
The win over No. 25 Michigan State gives the Huskers a successful run through Michigan over the weekend, and it will be the last time Murray visits the state as a member of the Nebraska volleyball team.
NU now begins the stretch run of the regular season. Nebraska heads to the West Coast to play Oregon and Washington next weekend, then comes home for the final three games of the season against Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.
