On a night when the Nebraska volleyball team helped the Mchigan Wolverines set a new attendance record, the Huskers looked for a time, as if they also might allow the hosts from Ann Arbor to pull off a massive upset. The good news is that after looking very, very shaky in the first set, NU managed to pull itself together and win its 22nd straight match this season.
Nebraska lost the first set in a 28-26 shootout before taking the second and third sets 25-20, 25-20. In the fourth set, the Cornhuskers had finally worn down Michigan and took the final set 25-14.
Nebraska needed every ounce of talent on its roster to overcome what as likely an emotional night for senior Harper Murray. Even if she does return for a fifth year on the Huskers next fall, Friday night was the last time the Michigan native will play in Ann Arbor. Because of the alternating model of the Big Ten schedule, Michigan will travel to Lincoln next year.
Nebraska volleyball rallies past Michigan for school-record 53rd straight regular-season win
Each set a different player took over to make up for the problems NU had putting the Wolverines away. Every starting hitter had double digit kills. Harper Murray led the Huskers with 16 kills, Virginia Adriano added 14 hitting .500. Andi Jackson had 13. Teraya Sigler had a double double with 12 kills and 12 digs, along with three blocks. Mania Ogbechie rounded things out with 11 kills also hitting .500 and adding four blocks.
After spending several sets allowing Michigan to hang around, the Huskers finally looked like their old set in the fourth installment. They erased any sense of life Michigan fans had in the building.
The Huskers continue their road trip in East Lansing, Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 31. Nebraska faces Michigan State at the Breslin Center at 3:30 p.m. CT. Big Ten Plus will broadcast the match. Having set the school record for consecutive regular season wins at 53 on Friday night, Nebraska will look to build on that streak and give Husker fans a Halloween treat.
