With two spots still open on the Nebraska basketball roster, the Huskers are still shopping in the Transfer Portal for front-court help. If Fred Hoiberg can land former South Dakota State center Damon Wilkinson after Wednesday's visit, it would be quite the addition for a team needing some serious height down low.
Wilkinson, a 6-foot-10, 245-pound sophomore from South Dakota State, has emerged as a new priority portal target. He averaged 13.9 points, a team-high 6.4 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting almost 58.9% from the field and 72% at the free-throw line last season. He started 19 of his 32 appearances this past year.
Damon Wilkinson gives Nebraska basketball a true interior option Fred Hoiberg rarely chases
Perhaps most interesting about Nebraska's pursuit of Wilkinson is that the 3-point shot is simply not a part of his game. In two years with the Jackrabbits, he attempted just one shot from beyond the arc. That stands out considering how well most players Hoiberg goes after shoot the ball from deep.
Wilkinson also ended his sophomore campaign by scoring in double figures in his final eight contests and had 10 points or more in all but one conference game. His play earned honorable-mention All-Summit League Honors.
Nebraska basketball still has work to do as NC State battles for Damon Wilkinson
It's not clear just when Wilkinson might pull the trigger for Nebraska, or otherwise. That he didn't announce on Wednesday does not mean the Huskers didn't get him. There have been several visits where NU targets left town, only to pull the trigger later.
North Carolina State appears to be the biggest competitor for the Cornhuskers. Wilkinson left Nebraska on Wednesday and headed to Raleigh for an official visit. It's possible he'll decide on a school by the end of the weekend.
