Nebraska football offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen spoke with the media on Tuesday. He talked about last week's 68-0 drubbing of Akron, and spoke about this week's opponent, Houston Christian. The Cornhuskers take on the Huskies this Saturday at 11am on BTN.
The young players showed up against Akron
One of the bright spots for Nebraska last Saturday was the fact that 108 players were able to play. And with that, it means a lot of young players gained valuable experience. Nebraska's offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen, was very pleased with many of the backups who got playing time.
Holgorsen was particularly happy with the play of the 2nd string quarterback, T.J. Lateef. "The lights were not too bright for him", Holgorsen said! Lateef went 6 for 7 for 128 yards in his limited time for the Nebraska football team. Dana said he trusts Nebraska Quarterback coach Glen Thomas when it comes to Lateef. Holgorsen also praised a few other players, like Quinn Clark, Carter Nelson, Izaiah Mozee, and Keelen Smith, saying, "the young guys played well."
Coach Rhule's 'halftime message' got through to the Nebraska football players
Many of you have heard or seen the leaked audio/video of Head Coach Matt Rhule's halftime speech to the team last Saturday night. Nebraska led 33-0 at the half, and Coach Rhule was NOT happy...at all! Coach Holgorsen thought that the speech "got the attention of the back-ups." Holgorsen added,
"I've never seen the red team, the white team, you know, 2nd team, 3rd team, and it wasn't just offense, it was special teams, it was defense, that went out there and played to that standard." Holgerson also thought that was how you end up with a 68-0 type of game, by having everyone play to that standard, and that level.
Dana Holgorsen wants 'explosive' plays to be the norm for Nebraska
Coach Holgorsen was very pleased with the explosive plays generated against the Zips last week, and wants to see it continued with Houston Christian on Saturday! Dana stated, "You put that on video, so was that just a one-time thing, cuz we were excited about the light show, and being up by a couple of touchdowns, or is that who we are?"
Holgorsen thinks the team is starting to understand what they can be offensively. The team has confidence in what they can be offensively. They worked hard today. I was proud how they went out today, what are we gonna do tomorrow? What are we gonna do on Thursday, and what's it gonna look like on Saturday?"
When asked about his interactions with Houston Christian or their coaches, Holgorsen said, "Not one time, they might as well have been in L.A." Dana also congratulated Nebraska football TE Luke Lindenmeyer on his engagement after the game on Saturday. It seems that Coach Holgorsen is in a good place with the offense right now, and that's a bad thing for Houston Christian on Saturday.
