The Nebraska football team is on one heck of a roll when it comes to adding players through the transfer portal. With one week until they play their final game of the 2024 season in the Pinstripe Bowl, the Huskers have snagged a few new players this week.
The latest addition comes in the form of Justyn Rhett. The former Georgia Bulldogs comes to NU just about 10 days before his ex-team takes on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the second round of the College Football Playoffs.
Rhett’s addition is an interesting one simply because it’s the continuation of a Georgia transfer pipeline. The Nebraska football team has now added four former Dawgs since Matt Rhule. MJ Sherman, Jacob Hood, Arik Gilbert and now Rhett. Obviously, the results from those players have been mixed, with Sherman the only real contributor. Still, this is why Rhett’s addition could be massive.
Justyn Rhett has legit chance to be a starter at safety for Nebraska football
Rhett started his college career as a corner, but Georgia moved him to safety in an attempt to get more playing time. With safeties DeShon Singleton and Isaac Gifford moving on to graduation after this season, there’s some big gaps on the depth chart. Singleton and Gifford were No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in tackles. Rhett will have a big chance to take over and finally start.
He’s the first addition for the new DB coach
Addison Williams going after Rhett could show the kind of player he wants in his backfield. The Huskers need to add quite a few guys to the secondary so Rhett won’t be the last they go after. And now they know the kind of guy NU is looking at.
Justyn Rhett has got plenty of eligibility left
When he arrives in Lincoln, the former Georgia player will have three years of eligibility. In a world where there are plenty of players transferring to their third and fourth team, that may not matter. But rev share might change how often people jump around. The Nebraska football team will at least get a shot to really develop the former Bishop Gorman, 4-star prospect who has played about 30 snaps in his career.
