The Nebraska basketball team appeared to be heading for a very familiar end result versus the Ohio State Buckeyes. Fortunately, there was a reversal of fortune in store.

Early on, it appeared that neither team could buy a shot and if you merely browsed the statistics, you may be surprised that the Big Red actually won.

The Huskers shot 38 percent from the field, 44 percent from the free throw line out of nine attempts, tied their average of 13 turnovers and were outscored in the paint 28-26. The good news is that as sloppy as the Big Red played at times, Ohio State played just as poorly.

The Buckeyes converted only five of their 17 three-point attempts while Nebraska sunk eight of nineteen. Yes, the Huskers may have turned the ball over (shamefully at times), but the scarlet and gray gave up the rock on 18 occasions leading to 23 points for Nebraska versus the 15 that the Buckeyes mustered off of the Big Red’s miscues.

Another impressive aspect of this win was that the Huskers’ bench scored 23 points in the winning effort as Ed Morrow would eventually foul out with 15 points and Glynn Watson, Jr. came dangerously close after picking up his fourth foul with 15:14 left to play in the game.

At one point, Nebraska was staring at an 11-point deficit but managed to overcome their second double-digit hole on the road this season (Maryland was ahead by 13 before the Big Red’s 14-0 run to win the game).

The win brings the Nebraska basketball team’s record to 12-14 overall and 6-8 in the Big Ten tying them with Iowa and Penn State for eighth in the conference.

Nebraska is on the road again next Thursday as they travel to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans (16-11, 8-6) at 6 p.m. Central.
