Husker Rifle team heads to Fairbanks, Alaska to finish their season at the NCAA Championships this weekend. They will be competing against 7 other teams and will walk into the range ranged 4th in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association’s Top 20. Look for updates on the @HuskerRifle twitter account.
They placed 3rd at the Great American Rifle Conference Championships (GARC) earning a 4,664 team score. West Virginia was 1st with 4,709 and Kentucky was 2nd with 4,671. Denise Martin topped the Husker leaderboard with 591 (out of 600) and Lauren Phillips recorded 590.

The high scorers in the air rifle were Rachel Martin with a 589 and Jaycee Carter with a 588. The M&M twins (that’s my nickname for them) were close behind. Maggie Mical logged in a 585, and Marissa Major fired off a 583.
This will be the last college competition for Husker senior, Kelsey Hansen. You may recall from our profiles that this North Dakota native is a biology major and really enjoys swimming. She was cheated out of senior day due to inclement weather but took it all in stride. Her favorite competition position is prone and she is excited to be back in Anchorage as a friend of hers competes on that team. We wish her the best of luck in her last representation of HUSKER pride on the range.

Fortunately for junior, Marissa Major her brother will not be competing against her and the Huskers this weekend. He’s a senior on the Memphis Rifle Team. She credits strength coach, Lauren Harris for getting her into great shape. Maggie Mical is a marketing major and likes to wake up a little earlier on competition days and will listen to electronic music to get ready and focused.

Alex Lorentz is heading home to Anchorage for the competition. Even though she is an Alaska native she said her favorite venue in which to compete is South Carolina.
Denise Martin is still setting her sights on competing in the Rio Olympics. She keeps up her workout regimen by weight lifting and circuit conditioning.

Jaycee Carter starts her competition day with oatmeal and fruit in the morning. She fires up (forgive the pun) by listening to her music and talks to her coach for inspiration right before her matches. Rachel Martin sticks close to her faith for inspiration. Her horse Whinny keeps her going in circles during barrel racing practice in the summer months back home in Peralta, New Mexico.

Lauren Phillips won’t be too far from her home state of Washington for the competition. She spends her summers working with the Civilian Marksmanship program and competitions. She plans on enlisting in the military after graduation.

As you can tell, these are some special ladies and we wish them well at the NCAA Championships. Shoot straight, crush that BULLSEYE and GO BIG RED!!!
