Husker Rifle Team, takes third at the GARC
The Nebraska rifle team competed at the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships at Ole Miss this weekend. With a team score of 4,664, they placed 3rd behind West Virginia and Kentucky. The eight-team field plus individual leaders from other squads began the weekend with a banquet on Friday evening. Nebraska shooters took home several honors.

Rachel Martin was named 2nd team All-Conference in small bore, 2nd team All-Conference in air rifle and 2nd team All-Conference combined. Denise Martin was also named to the 2ne team All-Conference in small bore and received honorable mention on the combined team. Lauren Phillips also was given honorable mention on the All-Conference combined team. Husker junior Alex Lorentz was named Nebraska’s Scholar-Athlete.
Competition began on Saturday. At the end of Saturday action, the Nebraska rifle team was in fourth place with a score of 2,306. The Huskers trailed Kentucky and West Virginia, the two teams tied for first place, by 17 points.
Lauren Phillips had the highest score for the Huskers with a score of 580. She finished in fifth place in the individual finals.
The Huskers carried the team small bore score of 2,306 into Sunday’s competition hoping to improve upon their fourth place standing. NU fired the second-best air rifle score of the meet to move up to third. Denise Martin had the high score for the Huskers with 591.

Nebraska finished the day with a final air rifle score of 2,358. West Virginia claimed first place with a score of 4,709 and Kentucky came in second with a score of 4,671 followed by Nebraska with 4,664. In case you missed any of our interviews with the ladies, find them on HuskerCorner.com.
The Huskers will shoot for the last time this season at the NCAA Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. Small bore competition takes place Friday, March 13 followed by air rifle competition on Saturday, March 14. It’s been a terrific season for this squad. Husker Nation wishes them GOOD LUCK.
