Nebraska Basketball: View from the Cheap Seats – Northwestern Edition

As Terran Petteway goes so goes the Nebraska Basketball team. Against Northwestern on February 2,  #5 dropped 28 points en route to a 76-60 victory for the Huskers.

It was great to see NU get back on track after tough outings at Michigan and at Minnesota. The team, as a whole, shot as astounding 62.8% from the floor including 47.6% from 3-point range.

This game was important for many reasons. First, the Huskers have to hold serve at home for the remainder of the season to have any hope of making the NCAA tournament. Second, this was a confidence booster going into an extremely tough stretch to end the season. The shots fell tonight which ideally will lead to confident shooters on Saturday against Penn State.

How’d this one look from the Cheap Seats?

– Finally, a third scorer! Three men went into double digits tonight while Walt P. (for three) going for 14 along with Petteway’s 27 and Shavon Shields’ 11. It’s no secret that Pitchford’s continued success will help drive this team to it’s goals. He was a major contributor last year and needs to be the same as NU winds down the season.

– Speaking of Shavon Shields, the junior from Kansas City deserves a big time congratulations for hitting 1,000 career points as a Nebraska Cornhusker. He’s been fun to watch play and grow in Tim Miles’ system after first being recruited by Doc Sadler.

NU struggled inside with Northwestern’s big man Alex Olah, especially early on. He is a tough load to handle inside as proven by his 6/8 night from the field, but I will say the adjustments that NU made paid off as he quieted down in the second half.

– Tip the cap to the big guys for Nebraska for helping keep Northwestern off the boards. The Huskers won the rebounding battle 24-17. If they can find a way to keep that going things will get interesting.

– I was so impressed with the guard play, especially on the defensive end. Benny Parker, Terran Petteway, Tarin Smith and Tai Webster all deserve kudos for helping limit production from the Northwestern guards.

– Was it absolutely necessary? Nope. But Petteway’s breakaway dunk with seconds left really put an exclamation point on this one. As Kent Pavelka said, it was a ‘tomahawk‘ jam! Would love to see more of it.
