When the Nebraska football team secured the commitment of 2027 quarterback Trae Taylor, many fans might not have known just how close a call it was.

One of the best quarterbacks in the last few classes, let alone his own, he had darn near every power school coming after him. Despite that, he ended up picking Nebraska and then went to work almost immediately, peer recruiting and being an ambassador for a program he still hasn't been allowed to officially sign with.

Why Trae Taylor says one visit to Nebraska football changed everything

However, it appears that the Nebraska football team was closer to losing out on Trae Taylor's commitment than some thought. That the Huskers almost lost this recruiting battle to LSU might surprise some as well. Most believed that if NU didn't get the commitment of Taylor, it would be because his home state, Illinois Fighting Illini, managed to woo him.

In a short blurb for the Gunslinger Buzz, Taylor let slip that it was actually the SEC power that was closest to Nebraska in getting his commitment. In the end, the quarterback picked NU because of the coaches and the opportunity, but also because of a dedicated fan base he continued to cross paths with.

"Trae Taylor (IL) committed to Nebraska over LSU despite nearly choosing the Tigers, he told me. He was ready to be an LSU commit, but one final visit to Lincoln sold him on the Cornhuskers. Taylor said he found a school with his degree and an offense that fits him perfectly.

'Everyone in that building was involved in my recruitment, and they did everything they said they would do. The whole state showed they wanted me there."

There is still quite a way until Trae Taylor can sign on the dotted line, and things might get a little hairy over the next year; however, since committing to the Nebraska football program, he's given no signs that he's looking elsewhere.
