Since committing to the Nebraska football team in 2027, quarterback Trae Taylor has continued showing just why the Huskers were so excited they landed him. However, this past Friday night's game might have been the best evidence yet that NU has a superstar on its hands.

Taylor, playing for Carmel Catholic out of Mundelein, Illinois, started the season with a hot hand and has only gotten better as his junior season has gone along. And then there was Friday night, when one of the best quarterbacks in his class absolutely exploded.

Nebraska football commit Trae Taylor puts up historic numbers in wild shootout

While the Nebraska commit's team eventually lost, 55-54, it certainly wasn't for Taylor's lack of trying. The game featured over 1,000 combined passing yards, and the lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter. There was nearly a fifth lead change, but after Carmel scored with 27.1 seconds left on a 58-yard pass from Taylor to Kyron Hart. The Corsairs went for 2 and the win. Taylor dumped a short pass to Kai Owens. He was hit just short of the goal line by Montini's Nico Castaldo to secure the lead.

When the smoke cleared on the epic shootout, Trae Taylor amassed 505 yards passing while completing 25 of 36 passes for 5 touchdowns. He also showed his dual-threat ability by running for 66 yards and another 3 TDs.

Even after Carmel's missed 2-point try, the game wasn't over. Taylor's team recovered the ensuing onside kick, but a sack by Montini's Santino Tenuta ended the Corsairs' last chance.

"We did what we did," Taylor said after the game. "You can't complain, you can't say, 'What if, what if?' We lost the game. That's how it is. We had opportunities to win the game. The offense, we put ourselves in god situations. It's a team sport and I think that's what showed tonight."

Trae Taylor's latest efforts would have won almost any other game. It's hard to watch a quarterback play a part in 8 touchdowns and lose the game. Still, the Nebraska football coaching staff has to be thrilled with its star commit, who also continues to try to bring more talent to Lincoln in the 2027 class.
