The Nebraska football has its secondary coach and it appears that for the third time under head coach Matt Rhule, that secondary coach might be a bit overqualified. Not that it’s ever a bad thing to have to much talent of experience in the coaching business.
What makes the hiring of Addison Williams especially interesting in how it came to be. The former UCF defensive coordinator isn’t someone that Rhule has a ton of experience with. And because of that he relied on the words of others when he was considering the move.
It turns out that none other than Scott Frost played a part in Williams coming to Nebraska football. And not just because he hired someone else for his staff. “(Frost) had great things to say about what people were saying in that department,” Rhule said about Williams earlier this week. “Everyone (did) — from people who were there, to people who were getting there. And then the interview went great.”
Scott Frost gave Nebraska football a boost
Williams is “finishing up” things in Florida, though there’s no chance he’ll stay on the UCF staff. It would appear he’s repaying a favor to Frost for recommending him.
Of course, Frost isn’t the only person who said that Rhule should hire the new defensive backs coach. There was also Jamar Mozee, a relatively new addition to the staff himself.
When Rhule sat in his office watching his new defensive coordinator, John Butler, conduct a Zoom interview with Williams, Mozee walked in and saw what was going on.
“He sees Addison and says ‘you’re interviewing him?’” Rhule said. “He said, ‘Coach, that is a great football coach.” Great recruiter. That’s a guy who gets his guys to play.”
Rhule added that he trusts Mozee’s instincts — “we see things the same way,” Rhule said — so it “meant a lot to me” that Mozee signed off on Williams.
Now it appears that the Nebraska football team is done putting its staff together finally. With a little help from Scott Frost.
