The Nebraska football team appears to be on the verge of a transfer defensive back. Ceyair Wright recently took a trip to Lincoln, and it appears he liked what he saw. More than a few predictions currently have NU as the easy front runner for his services.

This falls in line with comments that Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule made earlier this week about his secondary at the moment. And that’s why there might be more than a few red flags about just what is going on with the Huskers’ secondary.

Nebraska football has some red flags in its defensive backfield

On Thursday, during his summer press conference, Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule made it clear his team is looking for another stud defensive back.

“Our job, instead of taking the easy way out and always looking outside, it’s to look inside first,” Rhule said. “But, again, if there’s a corner sitting out there who wants to come in and compete for the job, I’d take him right now, because that’ll help those young guys to be better players.”

Certainly you want your coach to have that viewpoint. But it could also be sending signals that the “young guys” aren’t stepping up the way they should.

Another transfer, Blye Hill seemingly took a starting corner job this spring. Then he got hurt in the spring game and while the Huskers expect him back, he likely won’t be back right at the beginning of the season.

In addition to going hard after Ceyair Wright, Nebraska also announced former wide receiver Jaidyn Doss is moving to corner. Certainly that could be a testament to the wide receiver room at the moment. But it’s a surprise move that wouldn’t be made if some of the “young guys” were stepping up a bit more.

This is going to be a story to keep an eye on in the fall. For now, it seems like a pretty decent red flag for a Nebraska football secondary expected to be a strength in 2024.
