Since Matt Rhule came to town, the Nebraska football team has been extremely careful about how it targets in the transfer portal. That’s why it’s always big when the staff takes aim at someone in the portal.

That’s why it’s big that former USC cornerback Ceyair Wright coming to Lincoln to see what the Huskers have to offer. It’s also telling that the Huskers are recruiting a corner through the portal at this late date.

Wright has plenty of talent. He entered the 2023 season projected as a starter. He was projected in fact, as someone who could be among the best players in the Trojans’ secondary. However, by the end of the season, he was someone who had just gone AWOL. He didn’t play again after their blowout loss to Notre Dame in October.

The Los Angeles native recorded 41 tackles, including 30 solo tackles, one interception, and six pass deflections in his three seasons with the Trojans. This past fall, Wright played in seven games, recording 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss. He also had three pass deflections.

This spring, just because the transfer portal closed, Wright decided he would transfer.

It’s unclear who the Cornhuskers are fighting against for the defensive back’s services. It’s also no clear if Tony White and his staff are viewing the former USC player as a potential starter or a depth piece.

It’s clear there is an opening with the loss of Blye Hill for several months. While the corner hurt his knee in the spring, there is hope that he could be back at some point in the 2024 season. However, NU isn’t expecting him to return for the start of the season.

Ceyair Wright is actually the second transfer corner the Nebraska football team has pursued this spring. Earlier in the year, they went after former Michigan State player Jaden Mangham.
