Nebraska on the outside looking in as Cortez Mills commitment date arrives
Anyone still holding their breath and hoping the Nebraska football team can land 4-star wide receiver Cortez Mills can exhale. However, that exhalation won’t be in relief but rather in the form of a long, disapproving sigh.
Mills is set to announce his commitment on Monday, though an exact time hasn’t been named just yet. That means Husker, Oklahoma Sooner, Clemson Tiger, and Miami Hurricanes fans will obsessively hit refresh on social media looking for news. As it turns out, NU fans can turn their attention to other matters.
Mils was once thought to be a near-lock for the Nebraska football program. He looked like one of the big upset gets for Matt Rhule and his group. But that’s been fading for quite some time. Instead, it now looks like Oklahoma is headed to the SEC with a top talent in tow.

The Huskers were rejuvenated when sources close to the Florida receiver hinted that he might not be heading south. This revelation seemed to narrow down the contenders to Nebraska and Oklahoma. However, if the On3 recruiting analysts are to be believed, there might be a twist in the tale, with only one team left standing.
On Sunday, the Sooners received several predictions for Cortez Mills which pushed them to over a 90 chance of landing the special talent. In second place right now are the Miami Hurricanes.
At this point, it’s time to figure out what happened with the Cornhuskers. Matt Rhule and his staff were pushing all the right buttons for quite a while. It’s not clear exactly what caused the relationship to cool.
Certainly, NU didn’t back off the commitment as they don’t yet have a commitment to the caliber of Mills at wide receiver. It may be as simple as he wanted to go somewhere that was a proven winner. That seems to have been a roadblock in several of the races the Nebraska football has run this spring and summer
There is at least one caveat when the wideout’s choice becomes official later today. There are still five months until National Signing Day. Anything can happen between now and then.
