The new rule that allows Nebraska football and every other program in the country to have as many on-field coaches as they want has been in effect for about a month. Up until now, we didn’t know exactly what kind of changes the Huskers would make to their staff to take advantage of the new rule.
Matt Rhule and company did announce a few of the hires earlier this summer. Jamar Mozee was hired on from the high school ranks. Then came the big hire. Longtime Nebraska assistant Ron Brown will move from the athletic department offices back to the field as he’ll help with fullbacks and returners.
Those were two moves that people knew about, but Nebraska football wasn’t done there. On Tuesday, just after the team’s fall camp opening press conference, Rhule announced several other assistant coach hires.
Nebraska football brings on several new assistant coaches
Other assistants who have been with Rhule a bit include director of player personnel Keith Williams who will now work with the tight ends. A new assistant for the linebackers, Jack Potenza will work with the JACK linebackers.
Mozee doesn’t have an official job title beyond senior assistant, though Rhule said during Big Ten Media Days that Mozee would work primary with offensive skill position guys. Rashaan Melvin, who had a nine-year NFL career, will help John Butler and be an assistant secondary/cornerbacks coach.
Adam DiMichele is now also with the secondary and will focus primarily on safeties. Josh Martin, who coached tight ends last year, will instead be working with Ed Foley and special teams this season.
Aaron Coeling is now carrying the title of assistant offensive line coach. Finally, Josh Bringuel is the assistant linebackers coach.
There are going to be a lot of changes in 2024 for Nebraska football. One of the most interesting will be to see how this expanded staff helps the previous bunch be even better.
