The more the Nebraska football program changes, the more it stays the same. One way in which it is staying the same is that the Huskers are bringing back an old coach, to help out with on-field coaching one more time.
Taking advantage of the rule change that allows the Huskers to have as many on-field coaches as they want, Rhule has started filling out the staff a bit more. About 10 days ago, the Cornhuskers added Jamar Mozee. Now Ron Brown is back.
Rhule announced that the veteran coach has returned to the staff during his Big Ten Media days hit. While it was a bit of a surprise it looks like Brown will be able to slide right into the action and help out.
Nebraska football bring back veteran coach
According to Rhule, Brown won’t take over a position by himself, but he will be helping out in a couple of different areas.
Brown will be aiding EJ Barthel with the backfield as he will be in charge of fullbacks. He’s also going to lend a helping hand to Ed Foley and the special teams by being in charge of returners.
Perhaps the most interesting part of all of this is that it shows that Rhule has a very good idea how he’s going to use the unlimited coaches. It also shows that he might be one of those who is specially set up for this rule change, considering he was in the NFL not too long ago.
Veteran Nebraska football coach comes back for 33rd season on the field
Any Nebraska Cornhuskers fan who has followed the team at all knows that Brown’s resume with NU dates all the way back to Tom Osborne. He coached with the Huskers from 1987 to 2003. He then returned in 2008 and coached again until 2014.
Since then, he’s served in a number of roles with the Nebraska football program in the athletic department, but hasn’t been on field in quite some time. In 2023, he was hired by Rhule to be Director of Player Support & Outreach. Now he’s coaching one more time.
