As we get later in the spring and closer to the summer, Nebraska Football recruiting is shifting into its next gear. That means nailing down visits and trying to make sure that at least a few of the teams the Huskers are competing against fall by the wayside.
When it comes to Dawson Merritt, those first two missions appear to be mission accomplished so far. The Cornhuskers have spent the better part of the last couple of months as the frontrunner for the 4-star Kansas linebacker.
One big sign that the Nebraska Football team is indeed a frontrunner is that Merritt has locked in one of his official visits to Lincoln. He’ll be coming to see what the Nebraska Football team has to offer in June, in the midst of a flurry of visits to other Power Conference schools.
Interestingly enough, the Huskers are the only one of the final four that isn’t in the SEC. He’s also scheduled visits to Alabama, Oklahoma and Missouri. Also a bit odd that two of the other final 3 happen to be old Big 8 rivals.

Most of the visits that Merritt is taking will take place in June, though there is one quite a bit sooner. He will officially visit Alabama this weekend, Missouri on June 7, Nebraska on June 14 and Oklahoma on June 21.
Usually when a players takes visits on successive weekends like that, a commit will come shortly after. However, Merritt has made it clear that he’ll commit when things feel right and not before. That could technically mean he’ll commit before he takes all the visits.
It mostly means that it could go into July or August or even December before the On3 Top 100 player decides to pull the trigger.
“Whenever it hits me, it hits me,” Merritt told On3 recently. “It could be right after that last official visit or maybe sometime in between. But I’m planning to not go any deeper than probably two weeks into July.”
For now, Nebraska Football just needs to keep on keeping on. The Husker coaches are said to have established a great relationship. They’ll need to continue working him just the way they have.
